Ok folks here is the story. Warm air is flowing in from the Gulf of Mexico this morning. It’s causing patchy fog in the area so be carefull driving. The warm air will bring us up into the 70′s and set us up for a severe weather event as a strong cold front moves in from the west this afternoon. The Storm Prediction Center has all of Middle Tennessee under a slight risk for severe weather however, there is talk about raising that to a moderate level when the weather balloons are launched later this morning and instability can be observed. I’m confident at this point that the threat will materialize this afternoon unlike yesterday’s forecast and the main threats will be damaging winds, hail, and possible tornadoes. There is a lot more warm air and the front is stronger. As a result of this front a High Wind Advisory has been issued. Expect winds of 20-30 mph gusting to 40 mph. Winds will be higher near thunderstorms.

Well so far looks like the weather will just be rainy with a few weak storms. Many things came together to make this a non-event. We never made the temps that were forecasted and we didn’t get any break in the cloud cover. Anyway for the rest of the night expect mostly rain but possibly a thunderstorm. Tomorrow, however, shows to be a lot bumpier with a strong cold front coming through!

Well this morning we have storms developing in West Tennessee, thus far none are severe but that will change this afternoon. The storm Prediction Center has put us in the slight risk category for today and tomorrow. The main threats will be high winds and hail but tornadoes can’t be ruled out as conditions are favorable for supercell development (Pork Chops!).   Our main window from severe weather will be this afternoon and evening today and tomorrow. Stay tuned here and your favorite media outlet for more information as the day goes on and Make sure your NOAA Weather Radio is on and working (you have one right?)

January thru April

• Coordinated with the National Weather Service and the La Vergne Fire Department (thanks guys!) to hold our annual storm spotter training class in March. This is one of the requirements for the city to have its Storm Ready qualification and a great opportunity to learn something new without paying anything or a commitment.  
• Planned and conducted the La Vergne Severe Weather Workshop – This was an outstanding success and I received many positive comments so I’ll probably plan for another one next year and get some guest speakers going so you don’t have to listen to me
• Building a booth and displays for the National Weather Service Severe Weather Awareness Day. We were asked to attend by the National Weather Service and even though this is a Nashville event, it’s on the south side and there is a good chance that some people of La Vergne will be there. The theme of the event is preparedness and I think our booth theme will be “Get Prepared, Get Involved” highlighting ways you can make a difference during storm season
• Coordinated with Kathy T. and the Mayor to get channel 4’s surviving the storm seminar here to La Vergne. They are coming! I have been trying for 3 years to get them here and turns out all I needed was a note to the station from the big cheeses! (Thanks for all your hard work Kathy!)
• Working on a deal with Midland radio to get us some weather radios we can sell at a discount or give away. If we can do this we will set up a booth somewhere in town and sell (or give away) the radios and program them for people. We will see how this goes. I have a meeting with a representative from Midland Radio on Friday in Kentucky.
• Seasonal maintenance program begins. Will go through the weather office and 32’ trailer’s radio and computer systems and make sure we are up to snuff and ready to support what ever comes our way this year
• Attending the Kentucky Emergency Management Agency’s Severe Weather Workshop. This is a get conference and it helps me keep up my education. We get to listen and interact with leaders in the weather field such as Dr. Greg Forbes from the Weather Channel among others. (It should be noted that I pay for any conference I attend personally. Box has offered to cover these things but I decline because I believe the money is better used supporting our emergency services.)
• I will be attending the Southeast Severe Storms Symposium in Starkville,MS. It’s a two-day conference and we get workshops on how to communicate to the public and all the latest weather research. This year’s featured speaker is Dr. Charles Doswell. He is a god in the weather world as he pioneered several methods that we use today to predict severe weather. I look forward to learning from him.
• Working on developing a list of weather radios in public buildings. Once that list is developed than I’ll go around and check the radios to make sure they work, can receive ok, and change the battery. Box 100 used to do this before I joined and I think it’s worthy to get this back on track.
• Participating in weekly conference calls with the National Weather Service. If there is anything of interest or information on a storm I let the officials know and then get it out on the blog.
• Daily forecasts on the blog and I try to write about things of interest as well
• Try to advertize the blog best I can. Readership has tripled since 2010! (Thank you!)
• Attend monthly VoIP Hurricane Watch Net. This ham radio net meets monthly to train. The mission is to collect reports from ham radio operators (Skywarn Spotters) and other sources and provide that data to the National Hurricane Center. April is my turn to run the net. (not Box 100 Related)

Well that’s it for the first few months of the year. April – November is usually storm and hurricane season so I use all my gear and knowledge to help the city have the best information that it can. One good source of information is YOU! Let me know there’s hail on Old Nashville Highway!  This helps everyone make smart decisions.

November thru January is the holiday season and it lets me unwind and reflect on the events of the previous year. What worked, what didn’t, how can we do better? What can I do this coming year to make La Vergne a little safer? How can I help you make that decision to go to your safe place?

Well that’s a year for me. I wrote this for a few reasons. One was to answer the question of what a Weather Coordinator does, but also to inspire you. I’m just like you. I have a family and a full-time job. I face the same things like the rest of you. I choose to do the weather stuff because I have a passion for it. What’s your passion? I’ve seen a lot of people say “wow I’d love to do ____.” My advice is do it. The hours are long but the rewards are worth it. Don’t think you can? I heard this quote today on the radio. For me it said it all:

Today is starting out wet as a front passes through this morning bringing with it a line of rain showers. The rain has already moved east of our area this morning but we might still see a sprinkle until around noon. After that expect cloudy to thin some and a little sun to peek out. Winds will pick up today to around 15-25mph gusting to 30mph. Your high temp for today will be a balmy 60 degrees!

A Look Ahead:

Thursday afternoon is looking troublesome for severe weather. A strong cold front is forecast to come thru the area bringing with it severe thunderstorms. The Storm Prediction Center has all of Middle Tennessee in a slight risk for severe weather

It does seem like the focus will be northern Alabama (Chart below) but remember it’s 3 days out and a lot could and will change so stay tuned here and I’ll have more information as it becomes available.

What is Flash Flooding?

Flash flooding is a type of flooding that sometimes occurs with thunderstorms. If a thunderstorm that is producing heavy rains stalls over a location, or several thunderstorms hit an area with in a short period of time, flash flooding may occur.

By definition flash flooding is defined as a rapid and extreme flow of high water into a normally dry area, or a rapid water level rise in a stream or creek above a predetermined flood level, beginning within six hours of the causative event (e.g., intense rainfall, dam failure, ice jam). However, the actual time threshold may vary in different parts of the country. Ongoing flooding can intensify to flash flooding in cases where intense rainfall results in a rapid surge of rising flood waters.

We all know the areas that flood during heavy rains, the underpass on Old Nashville Highway, the bottom of the hill on Fergus rd. among others. But what should we do if we encounter water on the roadways? Easy, turn around!

It doesn’t take much water at all to pick up a car. Waters in these areas can be moving very fast and this kind of flooding kills 103 people last year. All of the roads that flood here in town can be bypassed easily. You have to want to!
